Mr. Robinson, Shake hands with Mr. Bender!

Jackie Robinson’s triumph over racial prejudice in baseball is well known, but fifty years before Jackie, Native American pitcher Charles Albert Bender also crossed the white lines determined to show the world how good he was at “America’s Game.” From boarding school oppression to ballpark indignities, the only Native American inducted into the Hall of Fame was not to be denied.
